Eric Dziuban
BS ‘03
Biomedical Sciences
Eric Dziuban graduated from Western Michigan University in 2003 with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences. After leaving Kalamazoo, he headed to Duke University to begin graduate studies. He is now a 4th year medical student at Duke, with plans to start a pediatric residency after receiving his M.D. this coming spring.
Besides the standard curriculum of basic science courses and clinical rotations for medical school, Eric has had the opportunity to spend some of his time pursuing other interests with more depth. This summer, he completed a 10-month Applied Epidemiology Fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. This provided unique chances for work in public health, such as coordinating a domestic disease surveillance system and participating in an outbreak field investigation.
To further his interest in global health, Eric first went to Poland for a rotation in hematology, between clinical courses at Duke. This coming February, he plans to return overseas to participate in a program in Ghana working to eradicate dracunculiasis (guinea worm disease), a parasitic infection that has caused much suffering in Africa and Asia over several centuries. Once residency is complete, he hopes to combine work in global health with his clinical and research duties as a pediatrician.
During medical school, Eric has accumulated honors in several courses and monetary awards for different research positions, as well as membership in several professional societies. While not in the hospital, he enjoys traveling as much as possible and being involved with his local church in Durham, North Carolina. However, his most exciting moment was getting married to college sweetheart Keri Anderson, now working as a special education teacher. A fellow WMU and Medallion Scholarship alum, the two of them were wed this June in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “I gained a lot from my four years at Western,” says Eric, “but meeting Keri was definitely the best!
